What Makes NYT Connections #1197 Tricky?

BLADE, DERBY, COASTER, and TWILIGHT each carry a strong everyday meaning that has nothing to do with why they are in this puzzle — and SNOW, SURF, and BOURBON pull in completely different directions depending on which thread you follow.

The editor is leaning hard on words with famous secondary meanings: the obvious reading of almost every word is a deliberate decoy, and the puzzle only makes sense once you abandon the first association that comes to mind.

This one is genuinely hard — one group is clean and satisfying once you see it, but the other three all share vocabulary that bleeds into each other, and a wrong early commitment will cost you mistakes fast.
