What Makes NYT Connections #1116 Tricky?
Every word in this grid is a real place: FARGO, CHAMPAGNE, SINGAPORE, LIMERICK, MOSCOW, GUINEA-BISSAU — cities, regions, countries, and islands all thrown together with no obvious sorting principle.
The editor's trick is that the same place name can feel like it belongs to multiple groups — a city that is also a film title, a region that is also a product name — and the puzzle exploits every one of those overlaps.
This one is genuinely hard: one group may click quickly if you know your cocktail menus, but the other three require you to think about each place in a very specific context, and the purple category is a real puzzle-ender.

Traps & Misdirects Hints for NYT Connections Puzzle (#1116)
These four are all famous films set in real cities, and all four are real cities — so the film connection feels airtight. But only some of them are in the Best Picture category; others belong elsewhere in the puzzle. Do not assume every film-city word lands in the same group.
MOSCOW Mule, CUBA Libre, and CHICAGO — cocktail names involving cities feel like a natural cluster, and MOSCOW and CUBA are genuinely in the cocktail group. CHICAGO, however, is not a cocktail ingredient — its role in this puzzle is completely different. The film connection pulls it away.
CHINA is a country, CHAMPAGNE is a French region, and COLOGNE is a German city — all real places, all also common English nouns (porcelain, sparkling wine, fragrance). That shared quality of being a place that gave its name to a product is exactly what the puzzle is testing, but be careful: a fourth word joins them that does not look like a product at all.
These three are all sovereign countries, and INDIANAPOLIS is clearly not a country — so grouping the three countries together while leaving INDIANAPOLIS out feels logical. That is the wrong move.
